My Workplace Magic: Desk

Some of you saw my ‘where the magic happens’ post and loved my cute little desk. I thought perhaps it would be a nice short post to tell you how I saved it from ruin and disrepair for about $5.

I really don’t want this to turn into one of those ‘how to decorate your house for less than___’, so don’t worry. This is just a quick aside because there was interest.

Here’s my desk. Unfortunately, I don’t have a ‘before’ picture, so you’re going to have to use your imagination.

Imagine that it’s all dented and dinged, and sad. You can see a couple really deep scratches in the top….multiply that image by about 50.

Repairing this baby was a two-step process.

  1. To repair the wood. I didn’t want to sand and revarnish this, because that seemed liked so much extra effort and I wasn’t sure it would be worth it.
~Mix 3 parts olive oil with 1 part white vinegar. Get an old rag and wipe the entire desk down, paying extra attention to any dents and dings. The mixture will fill in those and basically erase all but the deepest ones. It’s pretty much magic. I didn’t wipe mine off– I just let it soak in and dry, which took a few days. If you live where there’s humidity, it’ll take longer.
  2. Hop onto a home improvement¬†online store, find a color you like and that matches your wood nicely (I really thought this blue was going to be a little darker, but I love it anyway). I bought mine at Home Depot, as a little sample, and they shipped it free. It wasn’t more than $4. When it arrived, I taped off the parts of the desk I wanted to keep clean, and went to work. Ta-da!

That’s all. I’m so pleased. If you try this, do let me know and post some pictures!
